City Council Asks Bush Foundation To Review Other Options For Parking

A the February 22 City Council meeting, the Bush Library Foundation made its presentation to City Council, presenting the same plan they've had in place since mid-November. Many neighborhood residents spoke out in opposition, worried about continued encroachment by SMU as they try to take over the current residential neighborhood. The Bush Foundation and SMU are asking for a zoning change to allow a parking lot for the Presidential Library to be placed inside the residential neighborhood. The Council heard from both sides and continued the meeting until March 2, requiring the Foundation to provide specific information on alternative solutions presented by the residents. See video of the meeting here.

Was This Result Good or Bad for Residents?
On the face it was good, because the Council did say to the Foundation that it seems there are better solutions. However, this is similar to what the Planning & Zoning Commission said in December, but they did not enforce any of their requirements when the Foundation came back with the exact same plan one month later.

Who Were Those People In Favor of Rezoning?
The Bush Foundation recruited several people from several miles away, including non-UP residents to come and speak out in favor of the library, often reading statements written by the Foundation's own PR group instead of speaking from their heart. A strong showing from neighborhood residents is vital to our chance to protect our neighborhood and keep it safe.

What Will Happen Next?
The Public Meeting has been continued over to March 2. At that time, the Foundation will present their "analysis" of alternative solutions. Any UP resident will again be allowed to speak out in favor or, or opposed to the rezoning.

What Should We Do Prior to the March 2 Meeting?
At this point, there are two critical things anyone opposed to the rezoning should do.
  1. Write the City Council to state your opposition to the rezoning of our neighborhood and request that residents be involved in the analysis of alternative solutions, instead of only the Foundation.
  2. Clear your calendar and attend the March 2 City Council meeting! It will be held at 5:00 p.m. at City Hall. Being there in person will help defend the value of your house and the safety of your family. If ever getting a babysitter was warranted, this is the time!
