Your Neighborhood Is About To Change
While the coming George W. Bush Presidential Library should add much to the city, the library's planners have unfortunately given little consideration to the needs of the city's residents. Despite a spacious 32 acre tract, they have chosen to locate the parking for the library at the far north, directly adjacent to many blocks of residents.

CITY REQUIRES MORE OPTIONS TO BE EXPLORED
The University Park Planning & Zoning Commission held a public hearing on December 8 to continue discussion on the Planned Development for the Bush Library, including the parking issue. After seeing substantial opposition from the neighborhood, and with many details from the Foundation left open to debate, the Commission opted not to vote on the resolution, instead requiring the Foundation to evaluate other options for parking.

What Does This Mean For You?
With 300 to 400 cars and several buses per day visiting the library, the additional traffic in your neighborhood will increase dramatically:
  • Most visitors from the north will exit Lovers and travel down Boedecker
  • Many visitors will park on our streets
  • Our property values will decrease
What Are The Alternatives?
Thus far, the Library Foundation has refused to look at alternatives. Despite a large piece of land to the south of the building, the only plans offered up so far have green space and athletic fields south of the building, and parking areas north of SMU Blvd, backing up to houses on the south side of Dyer.

How Can I Help Keep My Streets Safe?
The land for which the parking is targeted must be rezoned in order to put parking lots down. The UP City Council has advised residents that the best thing we can do is to let them know our concerns.

To Protect Our Neighborhood, We Need Your Participation!
The only way to stop the zoning change required to allow these large parking lots next to our homes is to have a show of support at city meetings. It is important that as many people as possible show up to public meetings discussing this topic. You can find out all information related to these meetings on this web site. Be sure to check the Calendar page for updates on upcoming meetings. Also, review the People page to send emails to city officials to let them know your position.
